For select teams every season, quarterbacks are replaced, and new ones are brought in. Each team needs a good quarterback to win games. Winning quarterbacks can either be brought in through trade, free agency, or the draft.
Here are five teams who will be possibly making a change at the quarterback position.
New York Jets
Prediction: Zack Wilson
The New York Jets offense came 32nd in the NFL for total offense. Sam Darnold was drafted third overall in the 2018 draft. Since becoming a Jet, Darnold has yet to achieve a full 16 game season. Darnold has had ten plus interceptions in each of his three seasons and has yet to reach 20 passing touchdowns.
The Jets are walking into the new season with a new head coach, a new offensive coordinator, and a defensive coordinator. Robert Saleh is bringing with him to be on his coaching staff the running backs coach from his former team, the 49ers. The Jets gave Darnold the opportunity, and he failed. So it’s time to move on.
Indianapolis Colts
Prediction: Carson Wentz
The Indianapolis Colts finished the 2020 season with an 11-5 record falling just short in a loss to the Buffalo Bills in the first round of the playoffs. DeForest Buckner and Darius Leonard, two all-pro selections, were the key leaders on the defensive side.
Philip Rivers is a newly retired, leaving one quarterback on the Colts roster, Jacob Eason. Despite Eason being a fourth-round selection by the Colts in last year’s draft, Eason is looked at as a young quality quarterback who isn’t ready yet. Due to Eason being so young, that leaves a significant role open for this Colts team going into next season.
Washington Football Team
Prediction: Mac Jones
The Washington Football Team’s defense ranked top 3 thanks to putting together well front seven. Despite going 7-9 over the 2020 season, the Football Team won the NFC East. First-round pick and first time pro bowler Chase young became the defense leader with four forced fumbles and 7.5 sacks.
The Football Team went through 4 quarterbacks as the season went on. Newly released Dwayne Haskins, Kyle Allen, Alex Smith, and playoff standout Taylor Heinicke. Despite the impressive game against the Buccaneers, the Football Team is still looking to bring in a proven quarterback. The Football Team ranks in the top five in cap space, so bringing in weapons alongside Terry McLaurin won’t be as hard.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Prediction: Trevor Lawrence
The Jacksonville Jaguars finished the 2020-2021 season with a 1-15, securing the number one pick. Mike Glennon started the Majority of the jaguars season due to a lingering thumb injury for Gardner Minshew.
Newly hired head coach Urban Myer, former Ohio State head coach, is looking to bring a new spark to the team. Undrafted star James Robinson was one of the very few bright spots on that team, giving them hope to assist any new quarterback.
San Francisco 49ers
Prediction: Deshaun Watson
Due to injuries the 49ers fell to a 6-10 record and looking at the number of injuries they dealt with, that isn’t too bad. Jimmy Garoppolo has only produced one 16 game season over his tenure with the 49ers. It was glaring throughout the 49ers’ 2019 playoff run that Jimmy Garoppolo struggled to be the quarterback people thought he was. With the MajorityMajority of their defense coming back from injuries, the 49ers are looking to bring in a proven quarterback to take them back to the Superbowl.
