Padres young superstar shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. has just signed a massive 14 year, 340 million dollar extension with the San Diego Padres. Tatis Jr has played just 143 games in his short MLB career spanning the 2019 and shortened 2020 season. This extension is massive.
The Padres have shown their faith in the young kid. This is a huge risk as Tatis Jr. has only played 143 games, with time missed in 2019.
In 2020, he played 59 out of the 60 games. Tatis Jr put up great numbers in 2020. He accumulated 2.8 bWAR, hit 17 home runs, and had a .277 AVG, 366 OBP, .571 SLG, and .937 OPS. It is clear that the Padres wanted to get the extension done as soon as possible. They have done just that.
This is a huge high-risk high reward play by San Diego. This should work out nicely for the San Diego Padres. But Fernando Tatis Jr is a superstar with incredible marketability and talent. It is also worth noting that Tatis Jr is a great player to build a team around. He is young, plays a premium position, and brings energy. Padres fans everywhere must be incredibly happy.
The Padres originally traded for Tatis Jr. in a deal with the Chicago White Sox. James Shields went to Chicago in the deal.
