The Washington Football Team has placed the franchise tag on right guard Brandon Scherff. This is the second year in a row Scherff has been tagged in Washington. They hope that he signs with the team long-term.

Scherff was a first-round pick in 2015 and has had a stellar career up until this point. Scherff is a four-time pro bowler and was an All-Pro in 2020. Despite a history of injuries, Scherff is a top ten guard in football and a key contributor to Washington’s offense.

Washington has one of the most exciting futures in all of football. They have a top-five defense and a rock-solid head coach in Ron Rivera. Even though Washington’s offense wasn’t as strong as their defense, Scherff is an important stepping stone to turning around the 30th ranked offense in football.

Expect Brandon Scherff to sign a long-term deal. The franchise tag is only being used as a placeholder to make sure Scherff stays in Washington. This is a very smart move by Washington since they are heading in the right direction with an offense that just needs a franchise quarterback to put them over the top. Ron Rivera has built a nice culture in the Nation’s Capital so extending their franchise right guard only strengthens that culture.
