With one foot already out the door, a Lonzo Ball trade seems inevitable. The 6’6 guard out of UCLA has had a mediocre season thus far and may look to get his career back on track elsewhere. Even Lavar Ball, his father has made clear New Orleans is a poor fit for the guard: “No, he can’t stay in New Orleans,” LaVar said. Although Lonzo isn’t one of the best guards in the NBA, many are still interested. Here are the teams that could make a big push for him.
The Chicago Bulls
The Bulls are the current favorites to land Ball. He can offer a nice contrast from Coby White, an explosive and energetic sophomore. Lonzo Ball would fit well as the 6th man in Chicago and could bolster their chances at making the play-in game. However, it’s unclear what Chicago can offer NOLA. Despite his low value, the Pelicans have made clear that they expect a young player or first-round-pick. The Bulls reportedly already offer Tomas Satoransky and multiple second-round-picks for the 23-year-old. However, New Orleans wasn’t interested and would likely need Coby White to work out a deal. However, if one is reached, Lonzo Ball on the Bulls could be an intriguing match.
The New York Knicks
The Knicks have also been chasing the young guard’s signature. Through injuries and COVID protocols, they have been lacking a supplemental point guard. Ball could shine under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden and maybe just what New York needs.
A backcourt duo between himself and rookie Immanuel Quickley would be electric for the Knickerbockers. Ball offers the much-needed playmaking the Knicks need and could support them in their playoff push. New York could send away Frenchman Frank Ntilikina who’s career in New York seems to be coming to a close. If not, Kevin Knox could additionally benefit from an opportunity to jump-start his underwhelming career.
The Atlanta Hawks
The Atlanta Hawks have recently come out as a surprise contender to trade for Lonzo Ball. Interim coach Nate McMillan has gotten the Hawks back on track since being hired recently. However, Atlanta is still undeniably vulnerable defensively.
Lonzo Ball’s defensive abilities could be significant off the bench for the Hawks. He’d close their holes on defense and could help them make a run come playoff time. Cam Reddish‘s name has been circling in trade talks and could potentially find himself in the Pelican State.
The Golden State Warriors
An unlikely choice but one you shouldn’t count out for Lonzo is San Francisco. Lonzo Ball could do wonders coming on for Stephen Curry. A slightly inconsistent Warriors side could benefit from having a creative guard averaging 14 points. Steve Kerr‘s side won’t likely make a big push to land him, but for the right offer, they may be tempted. The Warriors are a win-now team and need some extra help if they wish to contend for a title this year. Lonzo Ball is a gamble that could potentially give the Dubs what they need. A move to California is one that you shouldn’t rule out for Lonzo Ball.
